March and Spring Are Just Around the Corner

Feb 20, 2025Kim Wiseman

As we move into March, things are finally starting to look brighter—literally! The days are getting longer, the temperatures are (slowly) creeping up, and there’s a real sense that spring is just around the corner. But with the return of warmer weather comes something else: mosquitoes and ticks. Here’s what to expect in the next month.

Longer Evenings & Later Sunsets

One of the best things about March is how much more daylight we get. At the start of the month, the sun sets around 5:40 PM in London, but by the end, it’s closer to 7:30 PM. That’s nearly two extra hours of daylight! If you’re up north in Scotland, the change is even more noticeable. The extra evening light makes after-work walks and weekend hikes all the more tempting.

Warmer (But Still Unpredictable) Temperatures

March is one of those months where you need to check the weather before leaving the house. Early in the month, daytime highs hover around 9°C, but by the end of March, we can expect temperatures closer to 12°C. It’s not exactly T-shirt weather, but compared to the freezing days of winter, it’s definitely an improvement!

Nights are still chilly, though, sitting around 2-4°C, so don’t pack away the big coat just yet. And, of course, this is the UK—so expect the occasional surprise rain shower or even the odd cold snap.

The Return of Mosquitoes & Ticks

Warmer weather doesn’t just mean more time outdoors; it also means the return of insects. Once temperatures start hitting around 10°C regularly (usually late March or early April), mosquitoes begin to appear. They might not be as much of a nuisance as they are in tropical climates, but they’re still around—especially near standing water.

Ticks, on the other hand, wake up even earlier. As soon as temperatures get above 7°C, they start becoming active. If you’re out walking in woodlands or grassy areas (especially in Scotland or the South West), it’s worth keeping an eye out for them.
